This Long Week

Christmas lasts for a full twelve days, but there’s just one week between Christmas and New Year and I’m never sure whether I should be watching Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, or playing party games …

THIS LONG WEEK

Christmas bells still ring
with the angels’ carol

but each day is tied
with ribbons   streamers

each minute wears a hat
blows a noise-maker

hours prance and dance
through light and dark

as people join hands
around the world

in the midnight song
‘Auld Lang Syne’
