Old Photograph

Happy New Year to you all. It’s a time of looking forward but also of looking back; the year has rolled over and stored memories come back to haunt me …

OLD PHOTOGRAPH

the past opens at
this tiny universe
of a school dining room
held in sepia

I peer closely at
serried faces
mine far back
at a table
in the middle

time was I knew
each face well
we talked during meals
or class timer

now the past
has closed
on them all
and they are buried
in my forgetting

This collection draws a picture of the poet’s divorced mother, an artist with two children, who struggled with poverty, war, and the realities of daily life, yet still found beauty and comfort in her garden, and her art. Souvenirs… so many when we get to be our age. My good friend from grades 1 to 6 is slowly passing away, most college friends have gone far away from memory. Thank’s for the memories.
