Alice the cat has a mat on my desk. This so that she doesn’t sleep on my papers. She also likes to sit on the top deck of my stack of letter racks. As a kitten she used to sleep there, now she uses it to watch birds, deer, mice …


seeks stories in magazines                                
sniffs the pungency
of small press publications
enthrones herself
on the current poem

follows my hand and pen
with erudite whiskers
and editorial sagacity
with comments purred

until I nudge her away
then back-lane epithets
erupt in yowled poetry
