On Going towards sleep

What do the stars do when we’re asleep? Perhaps they sleep too, or do they play all night? Or do they wait to play during the day when we can’t see them? …


I have put the stars
to bed   placed them carefully
tucked their blankets into place
and hung the moon
so that they won’t be afraid

then I have a bath                                
in dark water   stir
it with flakes of sunset
and go to my own bed
wanting to rise with scattered
petals of dawn raining on my dreams

I will peel back the night
and let the stars out to play
hunt the comet    cloud-ball or …
