Distant songs

I was watching kids on a playground the other day, remembering games I played in the long ago, such fun it was, even the remembering. I don’t think the games or pranks have changed much …

DISTANT SONGS

the game of childhood
played in small spaces
with delicious fear
prickling under skin

a prank that runs
and chases shadows
under fences through
high field grass
to pick unripe apples

rhymes fly on high
then skip from my hand
to your hand and fall
like jacks in tangled
limbs of laughter

This collection draws a picture of the poet’s divorced mother, an artist with two children, who struggled with poverty, war, and the realities of daily life, yet still found beauty and comfort in her garden, and her art.
